Newton's Laws Flashcards

1
Q

Define Newton’s First Law and what is it sometimes referred as?

A

An object will continue in a state of rest or of constant velocity unless it is acted upon by a net force. Sometimes referred to as the Law of Inertia.

Q

Define Newton’s Second Law?

A

When a net force acts on an object of mass, the object will accelerate in the direction of the net force. Acceleration is directly proportional to the net force and inversely proportional to the mass of the object.

Q

Define Newton’s Third Law. List 3 properties of this law.

A

When object A exerts a force on object B, object B simultaneously exerts an oppositely directed force of equal magnitude on object A. Equal size/ Act in opposite directions / Act on different objects / Same type of force / Act simultaneously.

Q

Define Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation and what is it’s corresponding equation?

A

Every particle with mass in the universe attracts every other particle with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers. Simply say the equation out loud.
