Definition of national heath priority areas
NHPA are a collaborative initiative endorsed by the commonwealth and all state and territory governments. The NHPA initiative seeks to focus the health sectors attention on diseases or conditions that have a major impact on the health of Australians. The NHPA represent the disease groups with the latest burden of disease and potential costs ( direct, indirect and intangible ) to the Australian community

Why are NHPAs selected ?
They contribute largely to the burden of disease
There is potential for significant improvements in health to be made as they are largely preventable

There is potential for a range of strategies to be implemented that can improve health in these areas

What are Direct costs?
Those associated with preventing the disease or conditions and providing health services to people suffering from it. These costs include all those associated with developing and implementing health promotion strategies as well as diagnosis, treatment of the condition
