What was the Night of the Long Knives?
The purging of Hitker’s political + military rivals in the SA
What did Röhm want?
- To incorporate army into SA
- More interference in Germany to help ordinary citizens (greater equality)
Why did Hitler need the SA removed?
- Needed the armies support
- Army felt threatened by SA + many leaders didn’t like their socialist nature
- SS wished to breakaway from SA
- Himmler told Hitler Röhm was going to seize power
When was the KOTLK and what happened?
On 30th June 1934, Röhm + main SA leaders shot by SS
- Von Schleicher + Gregor Strasser also killed had as they had similar views to Röhm
What was the impact of this night?
Hitler eradicated his would-be opponents + secured army support

A- End of Aug 1934, Hitler was Germany’s sole ruler, so he named himself the Führer
- After Hindenburgs death, army swore allegiance to Hitler as their Führer
