Q

How long do adult pigs need to be fasted?

What happens if improper fasting?

A

12-24 hrs
1.) gas accumulation -> dissension -> inc. P on diaphragm , impeding ventilation

2.) inc. risk of vomiting, regurgitation, aspiration .

Q

When are anticholinergics indicated in swine?

A

They are usually not given routinely.
Unless bradycardia warrants
Used to counteract S.E. Provided by ketamine (usually) & Telazole (might) -> salivation

So atropine is used to minimize secretion unless suction is available at intubation

22
Q

What is the Butyrophenone used in swine for sedation?

A

Azaparone

  • It is the only approved tranquilizer in U.S.
  • dec. anxiety & fighting amongst pigs (lower dose)
  • sedation (at higher dose)
23
Q

Which drug would you worry about PENILE PROLAPSE when given at higher dose in boars

A

Azaparone (Butyrophenone)

24
Q

What species is most resistant to alpha 2 agonists?

25
What is the alpha 2 agonist used in swine? What do you need to consider when using alpha 2 agonist in this spp.?
Xylazine Since pigs are the most resistant spp. To alpha 2, Xylazine does not provide good sedation when used alone and it may also cause vomiting ... Therefore, pair with KATAMINE to provide short term restraint (20-30 min)
