What happens to the nuclei when a strong external magnetic field is applied to it?
A
- Align w/ field or opposed to it
- Aligned w/ external field are at slightly lower energy level than opposed nuclei
- Radio waves give nuclei aligned enough energy to flip to higher energy level + nuclei opposed emit radio waves + flip to lower energy level
- Start: more aligned so overall absorption of energy = which NMR measures
