Nomenclature & Chemical Notation Flashcards
(23 cards)
Why do atoms bond at all?
Because they want to feel like the noble gases and they want to feel complete.
What would make 2 covalent bonds separate?
Something powerful enough like lightning, a tsunami wouldn’t do that though.
What are binary compounds?
Binary compounds contain 2 elements.
What’s the rule for binary compounds?
All of them need to have a net charge of 0.
If a compound is made of metal, what type of ion is it?
A cat ion, (+)
If a compound is made of a non metal, what type of ion is it?
A an ion (-)
Binary compound ex#1: Li2S
Lithium Sulphide
Binary compound ex#2: K2S
Potassium Sulphide
What are transition metals?
They’re metals located in the middle rectangle of the periodic table.
Name the ionic compound: Na2SO4
Sodium Sulphate
Name the ionic compound: Fe(NO3)3
Iron (III) Nitrate
Name the polyatomic: NH4Cl
Ammonium Chloride
Name the polyatomic: Cu(NO3)2
Copper (II) Nitrate
Rules for covalent compounds: For the first non metal what’s the “rule”
(di, tri, tetra, etc) **you don’t say mono for the first compound.
Rules for covalent compounds: For the second non metal, what is this rule?
(MONO, di, tri, tetra,etc)
Covalent compound ex#1: CO
Carbon Monoxide
Covalent compound ex#2: N2O3
Dinitrogen Trioxide
Covalent compound ex#3(THIS ONE MAKES NO SENSE BUT SHE USED IT AS AN EXAMPLE BUT IT DOESN’T EXIST**): OF5
Oxygen Pentafluoride
What are all the prefixes? (up to 10)
1) Mono
2) Di
3) Tri
4) Tetra
5) Penta
6) Hexa
7) Hepta
8) Octa
9) Nona
10) Deca
When would you put a roman number in brackets?
For a transition metal.
When do you write the first element without a prefix and a second element with a prefix?
Covalent bonds
When do you do the exponent cross “multiplication” thing?
For ionic bonds when trying to find the formula.
For binary compounds, if they’re ionic, how do you name them?
Just the elements names, the second one has to end with “ide”, (if its a transition metal, you need to also write the roman numeral thing).
