non-melanoma skin cancer Flashcards
(17 cards)
what are epidermal tumours?
benign-seborrhoeic keratosis
precancerous dysplasias - bowen’s, actinic keratosis and viral lesions
invasive malignancies - basal and squamous cell carcinoma
what is seborrhoeic keratosis?
benign proliferation of epidermal keratinocytes
common on face and trunk
what is the appearance of seborrhoeic keratosis?
stuck on
greasy hyperkeratotic surface
epidermal acanthosis
hyperkeratosis
horn cysts
what is Leser-Trelat sign?
eruptive appearance of many lesions may indicate internal malignancy
how could a BCC potentially kill a patient?
invading the eye and leading to the brain
where does Bowen’s disease typically affect?
legs
where does actinic keratosis typically affect?
head/neck - sun exposed areas
where do viral lesions typically affect?
anogenital skin
what do precursors of SCC show?
squamous dysplasia
what are the buzz words for Bowen’s disease?
female, mainly lower leg
scaly patch/plaque
irregular border
no dermal invasion
what are viral genital lesions often?
dysplastic
what are viral precursors associated with?
HPV
what is HPV type 16 associated with?
dysplasia
what is HVP found in almost al of?
penile dysplasia
where are SC of skin usually found?
elderly
sun exposed areas (face, ears, dorsal of hand)
UV implicated
what are the behaviours of SC of skin?
good prognosis
locally invasive
low but definite risk of metastasisw
what are the features of adverse prognostic features?
thickness > 4mm and poor differentiation
lymphatic/vascular space invasion
perineural spread
specific sites poorer prognosis - scalp, ear, nose
