Glossary
Key terms in alphabetical order. Defined meaning.
Used to help better understand the subject.
Headings, Subheadings
Tell reader the main idea of the text.
Subheadings: divide text into sections.
Help reader to locate information in the text.
Text: bold, color, italics, underlined, highlight,size, font.
Tells the reader to stop-notice important information.
Emphasize. Gives signals about how to read the content.
Illustrations and photographs
Help the reader picture the information. Give additional information. Teach material. Explain difficult sections.
Captions
Explains the Picture or illustration. Help the reader to understand information that may or may not be in the text.
Text box
Includes interesting facts or important information that the author wants reader to know. Creates interest or emphasizes important information.
Maps
Drawings that show basic shapes of the land, bodies of water, names of places. Help to visualize “where”.
Chart: schedules, tables, etc.…
Organize large amounts of information into a small space. Hope reader to compare information in a text.
Timelines
Show important events in chronological order or time order. Understand cause and effects.
Cross sections
A cut that slices something down the middle or part of an item. Show things usually couldn’t see by just looking at it.
Sidebars/inserts
Provide extra information that you don’t find in the text. Helps the reader see the context of an event or an idea.
Close-ups/bullets
Point out information to the reader that is important.
Table of Contents
Lists major parts of a text with page numbers. Outlines major points. Used to locate contents. See how everything is organized.
