Types of Nonverbal Messages (Code)
Kinesics, Haptics, Proxemics, Physical Appearance, Vocalics, Chronemics, and Artifacts
All forms of body movement excluding physical contact, physical contact, use of spacing between people/objects, the way we look/body type/clothing, loudness/pitch/accent/tone/pauses/speed of speech, use/perception of appropriate time for interactions/activities, physical elements/surroundings that affect the sort of communication
Assumptions of Nonverbal Code
All behavior is motivated by goals, each function/behavior can be performed in multiple ways, and single behaviors can serve multiple functions.
Ie why guys talk to girls, multiple ways of showing you love then, a hug can show commitment, affection, and trust.
Kinesics
Emblems, illustrators, regulators, adapters, affect displays
Direct displays, representative displays, cues and indicators, body language, displays of intimacy/closeness (but not touching!)
Proxemics (Edward T. Hall distance zones)
Public zone: 12 ft
Social zone: 4-12 ft
Personal zone: 1.5-4 ft
Intimate zone: 0-1.5 ft
Denotative Meaning
Usually the first “dictionary” definition of a word, the most widely shared/accepted meaning
Connotative Meaning
The emotionally charged meaning, includes an interpretative value, based on personal experience, and socially charged interpretations as well.
