first stage of normal labour
latent phase: irregular contractions leads to dilatation of (4-6
cm )
active phase : regular contractions leads to fully dilatation (
10 cm)
First stage duration
**NULLIPAROUS WOMAN:
LATENT PHASE: <20 hours
ACTIVE PHASE: Cervical dilation rate of 1.2 cm/hr
** MULTIPAROUS WOMAN
LATENT PHASE : <14 hours
ACTIVE PHASE:Cervical dilation rate of 1.5 cm/hr
False labor / Braxton Hicks contractions
Occur at irregular intervals
Intensity remains the same
Discomfort in lower abdomen
No cervical changes
Relieved by changing the position
True labor
Occur at regular intervals that shorten
Increases in intensity and pain
Discomfort in the back and in the lower abdomen
The cervix Dilates
Not relieved by changing the position
Second stage duration
**Nulliparus :
-Without Epidural :<2hr
- With Epidural:<3hr
**Multiparus:
-Without Epidural:<1hr
With Epidural:<2hr

Third stage
of labor
placental delivery
< 30 minutes
**gentle traction of placenta from umbilical cord
to help placental delivery
Characteristics of the third stage of labor
*The placenta separates from the endometrium
Usually < 10 minutes
*prolonged if >30 minutes
*Gush of blood(first sign of placental
delivery and detachment)
*UC lengthens(umbilical cord thinner and longer )
* The uterus becomes firm
