Write a few sentences about the history of Zadar.
It’s one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Croatia with origins dating back to pre-Roman times. It became an important Roman colony (Jadera) in the 1st century BC. In the Middle Ages it was a significant centre of Dalmatian trade and culture. Throughout history, it was ruled by Venetians, Austrians and the French before becoming part of modern Croatia. The city was heavily bombed in World War II, but many historical landmarks survived.
