Q

what is prayer?

A

altho prayer is talking to Gd, it is a different than the normal conversation between two people. our prayers are not just casual and polite conversation. for one thing the conversation is not between equals. prayer is what a creature says to his creator. it is the conversation between a sinner and holy God

Q

E.M. Bounds

A

prayer is not fitful, short lived thing. it is no vice crying unheard and unheeded in the silence. it is a voice that goes into God’s ear, and it lives there as long as God;s ear is open to holy pleas, as long as God’s heart is alive to holy things. it is a force that shapes the world

introduction

A

the lords prayer is in essence the disciples payer because it was for their use and not his. it was a template for what they should be praying for first and what should come next

21
Q

like hypocrites

A
  1. there should be no pretense in prayer
  2. we will not be heard based on the length of our prayers or because of the lords we use
  3. no reward will be given for our performance. the applause we will receive form men will be sufficient
22
Q

like the gentiles

A
  1. gentiles did not worship the true god
  2. repetitious babbling-praying with an attitude that god is not listening and he must be manipulated in order to respond
  3. prayer is not about changing the mind of God
  4. it also suggests praying where the focus is more on the words than the need
23
Q

quote Oswald chambers

A

we must not allow anything to injure our relationship with God; if it does get injured we must take time and get it right. main thing about Christianity is ot the work we do but the relatunshi that we maintain and the atmosphere produced by that relationship. that is al that god asks, and it is the one ting that we can do

24
Q

t

A

there are basic similarities between the Ten Commandments and the lords prayer. both address mans relationships with god. as well as mans relationship with man. it begins with making a relationship with god

25
Q

our father in heaven notes

A

although Jesus admonishes us to approach god as father, it is still with the distinction that he is out father who resides in heaven there grating us access to all that heaven has to offer.

A

and see If I will open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it

27
Q

many times the tendency in prayer is t begin by giving God our to do list. but Jesus in the lords prayer shifts the paradigm from man’s needs coming first to God first receiving the glory that is due his name. by first recognizing gods glory, it reminds us of the transforming power that he posses to change our lives

A

t

28
Q

thy kingdom come

A

asking for their kingdom of God to come is in essence asking tat God and his rule be felt on the earth. but in order for this to take place, it must take hold in our lives. the reign of God in ones life is then reflected through obedience to his will

29
Q

give us this day

A

Jesus begins the second half of his prayer by getting the disciples to recognize that their total depends lies in god. the provision that we are to seek goes beyond the physical “daily bread”, but it points our need for the bread of life

30
Q

John 15:5

A

I am the vibe, you are the branches

31
Q

forgive us our debts

A
  1. our forgiveness from God is contingent upon our willingness to grant the same to others
  2. by demanding that we be willing to forgive others before we seek his forgiveness, God is teaching how we are to deal fairly with one another
32
Q

and lead us not

A

in the sixth and final petition Jesus is not implying that god leads us into temptation, but that we are to seek his aid to navigate us safely through the land minds the evil one has placed in our paths.

33
Q

important note

A

the petition to lead us not nt temptation expresses a healthy distrust of ones own ability to resist the test part from the help of God. in essence, it achnleges our complete dependence on the lord

34
