(19 cards)
Natural Resource
Anything that people can use that comes from nature.
Renewable Resource
a resource which is replaced naturally and can be used again
Nonrenewable Resource
A resource of economic value that cannot be readily replaced by natural means on a level equal to its consumption
Fossil Fuel
a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms.
Nuclear Fission
a nuclear reaction in which a heavy nucleus splits spontaneously or on impact with another particle, with the release of energy.
Nuclear Fusion
a nuclear reaction in which atomic nuclei of low atomic number fuse to form a heavier nucleus with the release of energy.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle
electric vehicle (FCEV) is a type of vehicle which uses a fuel cell to power its on-board electric motor.
Solar Energy
radiant energy emitted by the sun.
another term for solar power.
Wind Energy
extracted from air flow using wind turbines or sails to produce mechanical or electrical power
Hydroelectric energy
energy derived from the movement of water
Biomass
the total mass of organisms in a given area or volume.
Ethanol (E85)
abbreviation for an ethanol fuel blend of 85% denatured ethanol fuel and 15% gasoline or other hydrocarbon by volume,
Geothermal Energy
thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth.
Petroleum
liquid mixture of hydrocarbons that is present in certain rock strata and can be extracted and refined to produce fuels including gasoline, kerosene, and diesel oil.
Natural Gas
flammable gas, consisting largely of methane and other hydrocarbons, occurring naturally underground (often in association with petroleum) and used as fuel.
Coal
combustible black or dark brown rock consisting mainly of carbonized plant matter, found mainly in underground deposits and widely used as fuel.
Propane
a flammable hydrocarbon gas of the alkane series, present in natural gas and used as bottled fuel.
Tidal Energy
a form of hydro power that converts the energy of the tides into electricity or other useful forms of power.
Wave Energy
power is the transport of energy by ocean surface waves, and the capture of that energy to do useful work – for example, electricity generation, water desalination, or the pumping of water.
