Nuero A&P (spinal Cord, Ventricles, Cerebral Spinal Fluid) Flashcards
(18 cards)
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there?
31 pairs
Where does the CNS begin?
Begins below the foramen magnum
The spinal cord is surrounded by what three meninges?
Spinal cord is surrounded by 3 meninges
- dura mater (outer most layer)
- arachnoid mater (middle layer)
- pia mater (inner most layer)
The spinal cord is protected by what two things?
Cerebral spinal fluid and vertebral column
The inner part of the spinal cord is composed of ______________
Grey matter
The outer portion of the spinal cord is composed of ______________
White matter
The spinal Cord carries spinal nerves from ________ nervous system to the ________ nervous system
- Central Nervous System
2. Peripheral Nervous System
The dorsal nerve root house what nerves?
Sensory
Ventral Nerve Root houses what nerves?
Motor
Grey mater is made up of
Motor neurons and interneurons
White matter is made up of
Ascending and descending tracts
Facts about gray matter
- Contains nerve cell bodies and unmyelinated axons
- Ventral horns (Motor)
- Dorsal horns (sensory)
- Motor neurons and spinal interneurons
- Organized in layers
Some facts about white matter include
- Anterior (ventral), posterior (dorsal), and lateral white columns
- White color due to the high proportion of my Myelinated fibers
- Ascending tracks - sensory
- Descending tracts - motor
How many ventricles are there and what are their names
There are four ventricles Lateral ventricles (2), third ventricle and fourth ventricle
How many openings are there in regards to the ventricles
There are five openings Intraventricular foramina (2), cerebral aqueduct, foramina of luschka, foramen of magendie
Describe cerebral spinal fluid
Cerebral spinal fluid is clear colorless fluid, produced in the choroid plexus in ventricular system, circulates from for ventricles to subarachnoid space through spinal cord.
Brief description of cerebral spinal fluid flow
Lateral ventricle > third ventricle > fourth ventricle > subarachnoid space > brain > spinal cord
Describe a cerebral spinal fluid absorption
Cerebrospinal fluid is absorbed through arachnoid villi in the arachnoid granulation’s.
