Number system Flashcards
What is the definition of Algebra?
The branch of mathematics which deals with the study of formal manipulations of equations involving symbols and numbers.
What is a Prime Number?
A number whose only factors are the number itself and one.
What is the only even prime number?
2.
What are the three types of numbers in the number system?
- Real Numbers
- Imaginary Numbers
- Complex Numbers
What are Real Numbers?
Natural numbers or counting numbers, classified into Rational and Irrational numbers.
What are Imaginary Numbers denoted by?
i or j, which represents the square root of -1.
What are Complex Numbers?
A combination of real and imaginary numbers.
How can Rational Numbers be expressed?
As a ratio of two numbers or a fraction.
What is a Proper Fraction?
A fraction whose value is smaller than 1.
What is an Improper Fraction?
A fraction whose value is greater than 1.
What is a Mixed Number?
A number containing an integer and a proper fraction.
What are Irrational Numbers?
Numbers that cannot be expressed as a ratio of two numbers and never terminate or repeat.
What is the definition of Absolute Value?
The magnitude of a variable without regard to sign; the distance from zero on a number line.
What is the Reflexive property of equality?
a = a.
What is the Symmetric property of equality?
If a = b, then b = a.
What is the Transitive property of equality?
If a = b and b = c, then a = c.
What is the Addition property of equality?
If a = b, then a + c = b + c.
What is the Multiplication property of equality?
If a = b, then ac = bc.
What is the Substitution property?
If a = b, then a can be replaced by b in any mathematical statement without changing the value.
What is the Closure property of Real Numbers?
a + b = integer and ab = integer (for addition and multiplication).
What is the Commutative property?
- a + b = b + a (addition)
- ab = ba (multiplication)
What is the Associative property?
- a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c (addition)
- a(bc) = (ab)c (multiplication)
What is the Identity property?
- a + 0 = a (addition)
- a • 1 = a (multiplication)
What is inverse property?
a
