Define Nursing
The profession or practice of providing care for the sick and infirm

Needs Theories
Early theorist organized their thinking by conceptualizing the patient as representing a collection of needs.
Common Practice in the 1960s
Maslows hierarchy of needs influenced “ needs theorists” in their theories.
Interactionist Theories
Focused on relationships between nurses and clients
More clearly defined the specific human communicative and behavioural patterns by which practitioners met their patients needs
System Theories
Systems theory helped nurses recognize that intervention in any one part of a system would produce consequent reactions in other parts.
Individual is a whole system and environment is not specifically addressed
