Nutrient Cycling Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are the 6 processes involved In the Carbon Cyle
-Photosynthesis
-Respiration
-Feeding
-Decomposition
-Fossilisation
-Combustion
What is carbon essential for the formation of?
-Carbohydrates- respiration
-Proteins- cell membranes/ proteins
-Lipids- Cell membranes
-Nucleic Acids- DNA/ RNA
wHAT IS NITROGEN ESSENTIAL FOR THE FORMATION OF
-pROTEINS
-nITROGENOUS BASES IN NUCLEIC ACIDS dna AND rna
-atp
wHAT IS DECOMPOSITION
-Decomposers are responsbile for the onversion of organic nitrogen compounds into nitrates
-Involves two stages
What is ammonification
-Decomposers covert organic nitrogen compounds into ammonia/ ammonium ions
-process aided by detritivores as they feed on the dead material and break it into smaller pieces- distribute it throughout the soil
What is Nitrification
A two stage conversion of ammonium ions into nitrates
- Ammonium ions into nitrites
- Nitrites into nitrates
-Process involves oxidation- aerobic process
What is denitrification
-Not beneficial to farmers
-Covert nitrates into gaseous nitrogen- return to atmosphere
-carried out by anaerobic bateria
-anaerobic conditions- found in waterlogged soild where denitrifying bateria thrive
-prpcess reduces soil fertility
-Detritivores, eg earthworms, aerate the soil (add oxygen), as they burrow through the soil- help drain the soil- reducing activity of denitrifying bateria
What is the only process and bacteria that requires anaerobic conditions
-Denitrification/ denitrifying bacteria
