Filter toxins from blood and produce bile that breaks down carbohydrates, proteins, fats

Stores bile produced by liver and releases it when needed

Produces insulin that helps with metabolism of sugar

Breaks down food and absorbs most of nutrients

Removes water and electrolytes from food particles for the body’s use while turning the rest into feces

A foods ability to raise blood sugar

Primary source of Fuel for body and help protect against disease

Support body functions such as hydration, metabolism regulation, and maintenance of strong teeth & bones

Makes up more than half of the body weight and needed for every system in the body, promotes brain function, hydrates & flushes waste, regulates body temperature, prevents overeating, acts as lubricant
How can we help patients make better food choices
Teaching them about the importance of understanding food labels and comprehending nutritional value of different foods
Clear liquid diet
Clear liquids like broth, gelatin, water
Enteral nutrition
Intake through gi tract, including via mouth or GI tube (tube feeding)
Parenteral nutrition
Given by IV through large vein when enteral nutrition not possible and avoid malnutrition
