Undernutrition can cause:
Muscle weakness
Intestinal ileus
weakness
decreased immune response
intestinal atrophy
slow or prevented wound healing
Intestinal ileus
Temporary lack of muscle contractions in the intestine
Intestinal ileus clinical signs
Vomiting, nausea, bloating, abdominal cramping, constipation
Intestinal Atrophy
Intestinal villi erode causing a smooth surface in the intestines
Dysrexia
Change in appetite
Hyporexia
Decreased appetite
Causes of anorexia
Underlying disease, stress, medications, pain
Anorexia
Lack of appetite leading to no food intake
Pseudo-Anorexia
Patient wants to eat but is unable to
Assisted feeding is indicated when:
Low BCS, Inadequate nutrition, Hasn’t eaten for more than 2-5 days
Refeeding Syndrome
Nutrition is reintroduced to anorexic animals and it causes fluid or electrolyte shifts
naso-oesophageal tubes
Stomach or oesophagus via nasal cavity, 3-5 days
Esophagostomy Tube
3-4 weeks start and ends in the esophagus
Gastrostomy tube
Placed surgically or by an endoscope
Jejunostomy feeding tubes
Directly into the small intestine surgically or endoscopically
Feeding tube care
Flush the tube with 1-5ml before and 5-10ml or water after feeding
