Nutrition of Fat Flashcards

1
Q

Way may fat be used as an energy source?

A

Can’t be used until the start of the kerb cycle.
More energy dense but synthesises at a slower rate than glycogen.
Used in exercise over 2h.
Aerobic due to more O2/g than glycogen

Q

How does lipolysis occur?

A

Acyl CoA needs a carrier (carnosine) and transporter protein (translocate).
Inside the mitochondria matrix Acyl CoA is used for B-oxidation.
Fatty acid is converted to more Acyl CoA by Acyl CoA synthase.

Q

Explain the control points of B-Oxidation

A

Glycogen synthesis and breakdown.
PFK regulation controls rate of glycolysis.
Fatty acid availability.
Regulating pyruvate dehydrogenase.
This is to ensure metabolic systems and processes maintain homeostasis for exercise.

Q

What are endurance training adaptions?

A

Physiological, structural, biochemical.
More B-oxidation to allow more glycogen so can be used when needed.
