Spontaneous nystagmus

A

caused by imbalance of vest. signals to the oculomotor neurons–causes constant drift in one direction that is countered by a quick mvmt in the opp dir.
- typ after acute vestib lesion
- lasts approx 24hrs

Peripheral nystagmus

A

occurs w/ peripheral lesion and is inhibited when pt fixates vision on an object

A

occurs w/ central lesion of BS/Cerebellum and is NOT inhibited by visual fixation on obj

Positional nystagmus

A

induced by change in head pos
- SCC stimulate nystagmus that typ lasts few secs

A

occurs when eyes shift from primary pos to alternative pos
- nystagmus is caused by pts inability to maintain stable gaze pos
- typ indicative of CNS patho and assocd w/ TBI or MS ***
