Observing Chemical Change Flashcards
studyyyyyyyyy (22 cards)
Physical Change
any change that alters the form or appearance of a substance but does not change chemically
chemical change
A change in matter that produces one or more new substances
reactants
substances that undergo the chemical changes
products
the new substance that is formed from a chemical reaction
precipitate
a solid that forms from liquids during a chemical reaction
exothermic reaction
when the energy is released as the products form is greater than the energy required to break the bond
endothermic reaction
when more energy is required to break the bonds of the reactants than is released by the formation of the products
chemical equation
a way to show a chemical reaction, using symbols instead of words
law of conservation mass
matter cannot be created nor destroyed
open system
matter can enter form or escape to the surroundings
closed system
matter cannot enter or leave
coefficient
is a number placed in front of a chemical formula in an equation
synthesis
the atoms come together
decomposition
atoms separate
replacement
2 or more elements in different compounds trade places
activation energy
the minimum amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction
concentration
the ammount given of a substance in a given volume
catalyst
increases the reaction rate by lowering the activation energy needed
enzymes
something that helps these reactions occur at body temperature.
inhibitor
a material used to decrease the rate of a chemical reaction
What is the proof when a chemical reaction occurs?
change in color, the formation of a precipitate, or the production of a gas (bubbling)
What are the 3 ways to speed up a chemical reaction?
increase the temperature, increase the concentration of reactants, use a catalyst, or expand the surface area
