Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Preoccupation of perceived flaws or defects in physical appearance that are not observable or appear slight to others.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder
Persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value.
Hoarding Disorder
Recurring pulling out of one’s hair, leading to hair loss.
Trichotillomania (Hair-Pulling Disorder)
Recurring skin picking resulting in skin lesions.
Excoriation (Skin-Picking Disorder)
SYMPTOMS:
Obsessions (unwanted thoughts, urges, images), compulsions (ritualistic behaviors); time-consuming and cause distress or impairment

Persistent, causing significant distress or impairment

Appearance-related obsessions, repetitive behaviors (mirror checking, grooming, comparing); may include delusional beliefs

Excoriation (Skin-Picking Disorder)
Recurrent, persistent, and intrusive thoughts, urges, or images that cause significant anxiety or distress. The person attempts to ignore, suppress, or neutralize them with a compulsion.
Obsession
Repetitive behaviors (e.g., handwashing, checking) or mental acts (e.g., counting, praying) that are performed in response to an obsession or rigid rules. These are meant to reduce distress or prevent a feared event, though they are excessive or unrealistic.
Compulsion
The degree to which an individual recognizes that their obsessive-compulsive beliefs or behaviors are irrational.
Insight
A specifier under BDD where the person is preoccupied with the belief that their body is not muscular or lean enough, often seen in males.
Muscle Dysmorphia
Accumulation of items that congest living areas, preventing their intended use.
Clutter
Thoughts and behaviors that are inconsistent with the person’s self-image or values, causing discomfort. Common in OCD.
Ego-Dystonic
Thoughts and behaviors that are consistent with the person’s self-perception or values. Seen in some cases of Hoarding Disorder with poor insight.
Ego-Syntonic
Disruption in daily functioning (e.g., work, relationships, self-care) due to symptoms of a disorder.
Functional Impairment
