What HF radio tests must be completed before “coast out” on a Class II trip?
- Primary and secondary frequencies from the telephone numbers on the appropriate enroute chart
- SELCAL check
When a flight level change must occur due to a (wx) deviation while in oceanic airspace, what altitude change rules must be observed?
SAND (South Ascend, North Descend)
Eastbound (000° - 179°)
Deviating North (left) - Descend 300 ft
Deviating South (right) - Climb 300 ft
Westbound (180° - 359°)
Deviating North (right) - Descend 300 ft
Deviating South (left) - Climb 300 ft
How many times may the same plotting chart be used?
Twice, as long as it’s the same trip number.
What procedures must be observed when “coasting in”?
- Set frequency of the first landfall navaid approximately 250 nm out
- When radar contact is established, make a notation on the plotting chart with the time
What restrictions apply when using SLOP?
- On centerline track
- 1 NM right of track
- 2 NM right of track
- Offsets LEFT of track prohibited
- Aircraft able to perform offsets in tenths of nautical mile should do so
What Equal Time Points (ETPs) will be computed on all overwater flights exceeding 3 hours?
- Medical-enroute cruise
- One engine inop
- Depressurization
Datalink Oceanic Clearance Delivery (OCD) Request Format
- RCL
- Callsign
- Oceanic Entry Point (OEP) / ETA at OEP
- Requested Mach Number
- Requested Flight Level
- Maximum Flight Level attainable at OEP
ex: RCL TFF938 SUPRY/2340 M0810 FL410 MAX FL430
Where can you get a “time hack” for the GPS?
- Via the GPS
- Via HF radio frequencies
2500, 5000, 10000, 15000, and 20000 (AM/SSB)
If a passenger travelling internationally is under 18 years of age and one or both parents aren’t present, what documentation must they have?
- A notarized letter from the absent parent
- If traveling alone, have a notarized letter from both parents
- For single parent/guardian, proof of single custody of child
- For emancipated adults, proof of legality
How far in advance will U.S. CBP be contacted for flights returning to the U.S.?
2 to 24 hours in advance.
What must be computed on all extended overwater flights where no alternate is available?
A point of safe return (PSR).
What documents will flight crews carry when traveling abroad?
- Extra copies of of their pilot certificates, medicals, passports, and other pertinent documents
- Immunization records
- Extra passport photos in the event another visa is required
What sources can we use to determine whether we need a visa to travel to a certain country?
- Jeppesen Airway Manual/Entry Requirements/State Rules and Procedures
- AIP
- US State Department website
- Company Resources
What is the maximum ETOPS time Talon can use?
180 minutes
What must be used on all flights involving Class II Navigation?
A plotting chart.
Must all outbound GENDECs be stamped?
Yes.
What contingency procedure should be initiated if unable to maintain assigned route or flight level outside of NAT?
- Turn ≥ 45˚ L/R, maintain alt/minimize climb/descent until ≥ 10nm offset centerline track
- Establish 15 NM lateral offset
- Climb or descend by 500 ft if in RVSM (≤ FL410)
- Climb or descend by 1000 ft if above RVSM (≥ FL430)
What contingency procedure should be initiated if unable to maintain assigned route or flight level within NAT?
- Turn ≥ 45˚ L/R, maintain alt/minimize climb/descent
- Establish 5 NM lateral offset centerline track
- Climb or descend by 500 ft if in RVSM (≤ FL410)
- Climb or descend by 1000 ft if above RVSM (≥ FL430)
- If descending below FL290
- Fly parallel offset same direction while in descent
- Descend below FL290
- Establish 500 ft offset
- Proceed on route as required
- Obtain ATC clearance when able
What is the maximum deviation distance before which a FL change must occur?
- Non-NAT
- NAT
- 10nm outside NAT
- 5m within NAT
What offset should be initiated if an aircraft is unable to maintain assigned route or flight level?
- Non-NAT
- NAT
- Non-NAT 15nm lateral offset from centerline
- Climb or descend by 500 ft if in RVSM (≤FL 410)
- Climb or descend by 1000 ft if above RVSM (≥ FL430)
- NAT 5nm lateral offset from centerline
- Climb or descend by 500 ft if in RVSM (≤FL 410)
- Climb or descend by 1000 ft if above RVSM (≥ FL430)
What is a 10 minute plot?
A waypoint recorded on the plotting chart that illustrates the 10 minute mark after passing a given waypoint.
How much fuel do One Engine Inop and Depressurization ETPs require?
Enough fuel to reach a suitable en route alternate ariport with a 30 minute fuel reserve to avoid a wet footprint.

- Retain last assigned code until radar service terminated w/in PAC airspace
- Code 2100 prior to entering Bermuda TMA
