ochem lab benzocaine Flashcards
(16 cards)
structural similarities between anesthetics
aromatic residue, intermediate chain, amino group joined via an ester linkage
benzocaine
ethyl ester of p-aminobenzoic acid
role of h2so4
acid catalyst for fischer esterification
formula
paminobenzoic acid+ ethanol makes benzocaine
quaternary amine salt
four alkyl groups attached to nitrogen
how many substituents in primary amine
1
amines are _____ that can be protonated to form _____
orcanic bases that form amine salts (r-nh2 becomes rnh3+)
increasing concentration of H ions does what
favors protonated amine
decreasing h ions favors which side
free amine (nh2)
how are protonated amines formed
reaction of an acid with the amine base
free aminea are usually what?
oils reactive to air and co2
are amines soluble in h20
not really so difficult to administer, but protonated amines are crystalline solids that can be purified and are soluble
steps of reaction
p aminobenzoic acid is a free amine, when cominf into contact with h2so4 it makes the hydrosulfate salt which precipitates. upon heating, solid reacts with the solvent ethanol to produce the ester (protonated benzocaine)
reaction between cooh group and ethanol is
a fischer esterification needing acid catalysis but amino group uses a large portion of sulfuric acid to give protonated amine
why should ph be acidic enough
not enough acid to catalyze second reaction because amine takes up all the hydrogens
role of sodium carbonate
neutralization reaction to precipitate benzocaine as a free amine (goes from protonated to free)
