Key neurotransmitter in Parkinson’s (PD)
Dopamine
Dopamine is both a ______ and a ________
Dopamine: both a neurotransmitter and hormone (different effects depending on where it’s sent, what its interacting with)
What type of neurotransmitter (NT) is dopamine, and what does it do re: movement?
Dopamine =
- inhibitory NT - regulates complex movements
- helps to produce smooth and controlled movements
What are other roles of dopamine as an NT?
Memory, reward and motivation, bx and cognition, attention, mood, learning
when do PD tremors occur?
- occurs at rest, improves with purposeful movement, or while asleep
PD stiffness/rigidity: how many PD pts experience this?
- all PD patients experience some form of rigidity
what is lead pipe rigidity?
lead pipe rigidity = constant, unchanging stiffness in a certain body part
what is cogwheel rigidity?
- cogwheel rigidity = jerky type movements
