OEM Day 1 Flashcards
(13 cards)
1
Q
Kinematics
A
- Study of the motion of an object, not the force
- Kepler’s Law: HOW plant’s move, not WHY
2
Q
Kepler’s Law
A
- Johannes Kepler
- 3 laws governing planetary motion around the sun
- observation of Mars over a large time period
3
Q
Kepler’s 1st Law - Law of Ellipses
A
- Plants orbit around the sun in elliptical orbit
- Sun at one focus of the ellipse
4
Q
Kepler’s 2nd Law - Law of Equal Areas
A
- Radius vector (line drawn from the sun to a planet), will sweep equal areas in equal intervals of time
- The orbiting body must be moving faster when it is closer (periapsis) and slower when it is farther away (apoapsis).
5
Q
Kepler’s 3rd Law - Law of Harmonies
A
- Period of the orbit squared is proportional to the semi-major axis cued
6
Q
Kinetics
A
- study of the relationship b/w motion and the cause of said motion
- Analysis of how gravity affects the motion of the planets
- Isaac Newton
7
Q
Newton’s First Law
A
- object remains in rest or continues to move at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an external force
8
Q
Newton’s Second Law
A
- The rate of change of momentum is proportional to the force impressed and is in the same direction as that force
9
Q
Newton’s Third Law
A
- To every action there is always an opposed and equal reaction
10
Q
Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation
A
Any two bodies attract one another with a force proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them
- Proportional = Masses
- Inversely proportional = distance
11
Q
Energy
A
- acts on matter, has no mass, and occupies no space
12
Q
Kinetic Energy
A
- Object that is moving
- Motion, Thermal, Acoustic, Radiation
- Apogee
13
Q
Potential Energy
A
- Stored energy, energy something has because of it’s position or state (ball being held up in the air)
- Gravitational, deformation, atomic, chemical
