Q

What is PECS?

A

Power Electronics Cooling System, which is a liquid cooling system for the large motor power distribution system (LMPS) located in the aft E/E compartment. It also provides liquid cooling to the supplemental cooling units and associated motor controllers of the Integrated Cooling System (ICS)

  • Fluid is orange so it can be easily identified if leaking.
  • 60% glycol and 40% water

(AOM 2.20.14)

13
Q

How can you grasp what is going on in PECS?

A

You can not, as there is no Flight Deck control for the liquid cooling system, it is fully automated. Only indications we have is the quantity of liquid on status page.

20
Q

What are the 3 concepts of performance?

A

OPTIMUM V1 - Unbalancing the field for an increased obstacle limit weight

IMPROVED CLIMB - Increases second segment climb capability by increasing takeoff speeds when surplus runway is available. Not effective if obstacles are present close to the runway.

ALTN FWD CG 2 - Improves takeoff performance by moving forward limit of CofG aft. By moving from the most limiting position (fwd) to aft decreases takeoff speeds, especially Vr and V2 therefore improving takeoff performance.
o Less lift force on main wing and H-Stab means less drag which results in better climb performance.
o Less lift (AoA) on main wing, leads to reduced stall speed which leads to reduced TO speeds resulting in reduced TO distance.
