Q

what is the taxonomy hierarchy (explanation)

A

series of groups (taxa) where organisms share one or more common features and a common ancestor
organisms are first divided into larger groups then sub-divided into smaller groups
down the hierarchy there are:
more groups at each level

Q

how do taxonomists classify living organisms

A

organisms are placed into groups based on similarities in phenotype (anatomical/homologous features) and similarities in genotype
molecular phylogeny is used to identify similarities in DNA base sequences
organisms that have the same features will be placed in the same taxonomic group
organisms that have similar characteristics, DNA and can interbreed to produce fertile offspring are placed in the same species
