Olfaction Flashcards
Sense of smell from LAB and LEC [information provided all came from the PowerPoint presentations in Moodle] (15 cards)
How many receptors for the sense of smell?
10-100 million receptors
What are the three types of cells in the olfactory epithelium?
Supporting cells, Basal cells, Olfactory receptors
How many extension/s does the neurons in an olfactory receptor have?
(Bipolar neuron) Two - an axon and a dendrite
Where does the axon of a neuron in an olfactory receptor project through and where does it end?
Cribriform plate and Olfactory bulb
Cilia that project from the dendrite.
Olfactory hairs
They stimulate olfactory hairs.
Odorant
Columnar epithelial cells are located where?
Mucous membrane
What are the functions of supporting cells? PS, N, EI
Physical support, nourishment, and electrical
insulation
The upper portion of the nasal cavity is occupied by?
Olfactory epithelium
What is the rate in which odors occur?
The decreasing sensitivity or adaption is rapid.
How many bundles of axons are there? and how many holes are in the cribriform plate?
40 bundles of unmyelinated axons extend through 20 holes in the cribriform plate .
What do the axons of olfactory receptors form?
Olfactory (I) nerves (they convey impulses to the olfactory bulbs)
(1) What comes after the olfactory tract when impulses are conducted?
Limbic system
(2) What comes after the Limbic system?
Hypothalamus
(3) What comes after the hypothalamus?
Cerebral cortex (temporal lobe)
