What were the issues with Rio?
Crime, poor healthcare, education, water supply (12% of all),
How did the government try to overcome them?
Police presence in favelas, mobile medical staff, volunteering in schools, treatment to water (now 95% of all)
What changed as a result of overcoming these issues?
Second most important industrial city, 6% of all jobs, one of the highest incomes per capita.
Effect of Olympic Games on the city?
Redevelopment of brownfield sites to new sports centres, 240 billion spent on Growth Acceleration.
Underlying issues to this day.
Unemployment still at 20%, drug distribution and crime lead 6000 killed each year, 50% of the poorest only earn 13% of all income.
Legacy of the Olympic Games facilities.
Pools and other sites were abandoned as they did not have money to maintain them or continue their use, causing closure.
