Q

Headaches Tx goals

A
  • Promote relaxation
  • Reduce pain
  • Reduce hypertonicity
  • Increase ROM
  • Tissue health
23
Q

Hypertension Contraindications

A
  • Prolonged vigorous, or potentially painful techniques
  • Full body lymphatic drainage
24
Q

Headache palpation

A

Commonly affected muscles: trapezius, SCM, levator scapula, suboccipitals,
muscles of mastication, scalp
 Palpate muscles of respiration (scalenes, SCM, intercostals, diaphragm)
 Palpate areas for heat, coolness (ischemic), hypertonicity, trigger points in
muscles

25
preg ci's
* joint mobilization due to the effects of relaxin * Avoid deep massage to the low back, sacrum and abdomen in the first trimester
26
Headache ci's
Prone may not be tolerated (we will just say no prone) * No strokes toward the head (potential to increase circulation) * Modify treatment depth of pressure, and aggressiveness of treatment * Modify amount of TP work (ischemic comp.) * (check in before work on head/scalp work)
27
Cardiovascular Ci's
Increase the work of the heart: e.g. by dramatically increasing venous return * Increase the risk of local tissue damage: e.g. XFF can cause prolonged bleeding in malnourished tissue
28
Pregnancy (General Discomfort or Low Back Pain) ✅ Homecare:
Walking: Short, frequent walks to support circulation and reduce swelling. Hydrotherapy: Warm (not hot) baths or warm compress to low back or hips.
29
Cardiovascular (e.g. Hypertension, Mild Heart Conditions) ✅ Homecare:
Diaphragmatic breathing: Promotes relaxation and lowers blood pressure. Gentle walks: Support circulation, reduce stress. Stress management: Meditation, journaling, quiet time. Hydrotherapy: Neutral temperature baths or alternating hand/foot baths to support circulation.
30
Headaches homecare
Suboccipital self-release with a tennis ball or fingers. Neck stretches: Lateral flexion, gentle rotation. Posture correction: Chin tucks, wall posture check. Hydrotherapy: Warm compress to neck/shoulders.
31
Respiratory Conditions (e.g. Asthma, COPD) ✅ Homecare:
Pursed-lip breathing: Helps with exhalation control. Diaphragmatic breathing: Reduces accessory muscle overuse. Gentle chest stretches: Wall angels or doorway pec stretches. Hydrotherapy: Warm steam or shower for mild congestion relief.
32
Sinus Congestion or Sinusitis ✅ Homecare:
Steam inhalation: Bowl of hot water + towel over head. Facial massage: Gentle pressure over frontal and maxillary sinuses. Hydration: Thin out mucus. Nasal rinse: Saline spray or neti pot (if comfortable).
