Phys dependence
physiological adaptation to the continuous presence of certain drugs in the body. Withholding opioids after physical dependence develops results in transient withdrawal symptoms.
Pharm tolerance
The reduced effectiveness of a given dose of medication over time
Addiction/SUD
Characterized by psychological dependence, compulsive drug use, and continued use despite harm
Pseudoaddiction
Pattern of drug-seeking behavior due to under treatment of pain
Misuse
Taking an rx for a purpose other than the prescribed reason; taking medication in a manner or at a dose not recommended by the clinician; taking a drug that is not prescribed
Abuse
Knowingly taking drugs expecting a euphoric response
challenges in diagnosing opioid use disorder/ addiction
- Tolerance and physical dependence develop in most people using opioids
- Patients with chronic pain frequently report/evidence:
- “I’m only taking what the doctor prescribes.”
- giving up roles, activities due to pain or being “too tired to go”
- wishing they could stop taking opioids or unsuccessful attempts to cut down or quit
- preoccupation with taking medications
