What is the function of the hard palate?
Assist with chewing
The hard palate is a bony structure that provides a surface against which food can be crushed.
What is the role of the soft palate during eating?
Elevation of soft palate for food to not enter the nasal canal
The soft palate helps in the swallowing process by closing off the nasal passages.
What comprises the lateral wall of the oral cavity?
Cheeks (buccal mucosa)
The buccal mucosa is the lining of the inside of the cheeks.
What is the anterior wall of the oral cavity?
Oral front (lips)
The anterior wall is formed by the lips, which play a crucial role in speech and eating.
What forms the posterior wall of the mouth?
Inside of mouth
The posterior wall includes the structures at the back of the oral cavity.
What connects the lips with the gums?
Superior and inferior labial frenulum
These are small folds of tissue that help anchor the lips to the gums.
What is the free gingival?
Separate to tooth closest to tooth
The free gingival margin is the edge of the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth.
What is the interdental gingiva?
In-between teeth
The interdental gingiva fills the spaces between adjacent teeth.
What is the attached gingival area?
Connected to tooth (under free gingival)
The attached gingiva is the portion of the gum that is firmly bound to the underlying bone.
