12
Q

What is the method of isolation to work out the rate law?

A

Set up the experiment so only one component changes, eg. A and the other 2 remain constant
This allows you to measure the order of reaction with respect to A

13
Q

What is the method of initial rates to work out the rate law?

A

Assume the first portion of the concentration vs time plot is linear
To work out the initial rate, use the equation Change in conc / change in time
Then you can use the initial rate to work out the orders of the reactant

16
Q

How is the order of a reaction obtained?

A

From the rate of the overall reaction

17
Q

How can the molecularity of a reaction be deduced?

A

it is deduced from the rate determining step in the proposed reaction mechanism

18
Q

What type of values can the order of reaction have?

A

May have a whole number, zero or even fractional value

19
Q

What type of values can molecularity of a reaction have?

A

Always a whole number and never zero

20
Q

How can the order of a reaction not be obtained?

A

Not obtained from a balanced of stochiometric reaction

21
Q

How can the molecularity of a reaction be obtained?

A

from the balanced equation of a single reaction step from a known mechanism

22
Q

What does the order of reaction not tell you?

A

Doesn’t give you any information about the reaction mechanism, though it gives some suggestions

23
Q

What does the molecularity of a reaction tell you?

A

reveals some fundamental facts about the reaction mechanism

24
