Organelles Flashcards
(12 cards)
What does the Nucleus do?
Controls the cells activities by transcribing DNA into RNA which leaves the nucleus through nuclear pores
What do mitochondria do?
Mitochondria are the site of aerobic respiration where ATP are produced
What do chloroplasts do?
The site of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis happens in grana and stroma
What does the Golgi apparatus do?
It processes and packages lipids and proteins.
It also makes lysosomes
What does a Golgi vesicle do?
Stores lipids and proteins made by the Golgi apparatus and transports the to the cell surface membrane (exocytosis)
What does a lysosome do?
Contains digestive enzymes called lysozymes.
These digest invading cells or break down old organelles
What does a ribosome do?
Synthesises proteins
What does the rough endoplasmic reticulum do?
Folds and processed proteins that have been made at the ribosomes
What does the smooth endoplasmic reticulum do?
Synthesises and processes lipids
What does the cell wall do?
Gives the cell structural support and stops it from bursting
What does the cell vacuole do? (Plant cells)
Helps maintain pressure inside the cell.
It also helps isolate unwanted chemicals inside the cell.
What does the plasma membrane (cell-surface membrane) do?
Regulates the movement of substances in and out of the cell
Contains receptor molecules which allow it to respond to hormones etc
