Organic analysis Flashcards
(6 cards)
Describe the test and result for alkenes
C=C alkene = Shake with bromine water as a reagent
Orange- colourless
( decolourises)
Describe the test and result for alcohols ( primary and secondary)
R-OH alcohol- Acidified K2(C2O7) with sulfuric acid ( warm)
Orange- green colour as a result
Describe the test and result for COOH ( carboxylic acid)
R-COOH- Sodium carbonate as a reagent ( NaHCO3 aq or s )
Effervescene of CO2 evolved
Describe the test and result for R-CHO ( aldehyde)
Fehlings solution and warm
Blue solution to red ppt
Tollens solution and warm
Silver mirror formed
Describe the test and result for halegenoalkanes ( chloroethane)
R-X, Halegenoalkanes
Acidified AgNO3(aq), warm
Result - Slow formation of AgCl precipitate
White-chloride
Cream-bromide
Yellow - iodide
Then add dilute ammonia solution
White- redissolves (chloride)
Conc ammonia solution is then added to identify if it is bromine or iodine, bromine dissolves again
