Organic Chapter 4: Organic Analysis Flashcards

1
Q

How can you test for different types of alcohols?

A

Oxidise them with acidified potassium dichromate
Primary - orange solution goes green
Secondary - Orange solution goes green
Tertiary - remians orange

Tell between Primary & secondary by using tollen’s reagent, distill the product & the reagent will form a silver mirror if the alcohol is secondary
