Complete combustion
Alcohol + Oxygen = CO2 +Water
Incomplete combustion
Alcohol + Oxygen = CO +Water
Ethanol + Sodium
Sodium Ethoxide + Hydrogen
Oxidising alcohol (without combustion)
Alcohol + Oxygen = Carboxylic Acid (COOH)
Addition Polymerisation needs
A double bond which breaks in order to produce a single bond to bond to the next monomer.
Condensation polymerisation is used to
combine monomers that have multiple functional groups (usually also producing water as a by-product- hence condensation)
How to make a polyester
Reacting an diol (alcohol w 2 functional groups) with a dicarboxylic acid (carboxylic acid w 2 functional groups), thus removing water molecules from either side many times, to make a link (‘many esters’)
What functional groups do amino acids have
Amino group (NH2)
Carboxyl group (COOH)
What can amino acids be polymerised into
Polypeptides/proteins
What is DNA (made up of)
Two-stranded polymer made from 4 nucleotide monomers, which complement another in the group.
Polymers of Glucose
Starch (α-glucose)
Cellulose (β-glucose)
