Organic Chemistry Flashcards
(19 cards)
What does a alcohol class look like
C-C-C-OH
Pentanol
What does a ether class look like
c-c-c-o-c-c
Eth-oxy-propane
What does a thiol group look like
c-c-c-c-sh
Butanethiol
Number of carbons then add thiol to end
What is a aldehyde class look like
(Butanol)
O
||
C-C-C-C
|
H
Butanol
What does a Ketone class look like
(Butanone)
O

C-C

C-C
Butanone
What does carboxylic acid class look like (propanoic acid)
O
||
C-C-C-OH
Propanoic acid
Alcohol exceptions
-If more then one hydroxyl group it is diol, triol, etc
-if attached to a benze it is called phenol
Ether exceptions
If there is a number that is where the O branches off
Thiol exceptions
Name the carbon chain then add the sh to the end
Aldehyde exceptions
-Carbon is at the 1st c and is attached to a H
-when attached to a ring the suffix is CARBALDEHYDE
-if two carbonyl groups add suffix DIAL
Ketone exceptions
-Branch is 2,3…
-if more then one carbonyl use Dione, trione
-
Carboxylic acid exceptions
-If on a ring suffix is CARBOXYLIC ACID and is a branch
-if two carboxylic groups use suffix DIONIC ACID
Ester exception
Name single bonded O first
And double next
What are polymers and monomers
-Polymers are large chain like molecules made by linking up smaller repeating chemical units
-Monomers are the small repeating units
What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated
Saturated- single bonded
Unsaturated- double/triple bonds
What is the difference between cis and trans isomers(stereoisomers)
Cis-2 groups on the same side as the double bond
Trans-2 groups on opposite sides of the bond
What is a structural isomers
When somthing has the same formula but different arrangements
Differentiate between the types of inter molecular forces. Which of these is the strongest.

LD- are present between all molecules
DD- are present in all polar molecules
HB-are present only when bonded to N,O,F
What do you put in front of the carbons if it’s a ring structure
Cyclo
