Organic Chemistry Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is meant by the term hydrocarbon?
A compound that contains only hydrogen and carbon
What is meant by the term Homologous series?
A series or family of organic compounds that have similar properties or chemical properties
What is meant by the term isomer?
Isomers are the compounds that have the same molecular formula but different displayed formulae
How do you represent organic molecules using empirical formulae?
Using the simplest number ratio e.g
Hydrogen peroixde is H2O2 but is represented as HO
How do you represent organic molecules using Molecular formulae?
The molecular formula shows the actual number of atoms in a molecule
E.g Butane is written as C4H10
How do you represent organic molecules using General formulae?
General formulae shows the general number ratio of atoms using (n) e.g
Cn+H2n+2
How do you represent organic molecules using Displayed formulae
Shows the spatial arrangement of all the atoms and bonds in a molecule
How do you represent organic molecules using Structural Formulae
in a structural formulae enough information is shown to make the structure clear, but most of the actual covalent bonds are omitted
e.g pentane is written instead of C5H12 but as CH3 (CH2)3CH3
How can you remeber the 6 Hydrocarbons using the suffix?
Meth = 1
Eth = 2
Prop = 3
But = 4
Pent = 5
Hex = 6
What is meant by an addition reaction?
It takes place when 2 or more molecules combine to form a larger molecule with no other products
E.G: C2H4 +Br2 = C2H4Br2
What is meant by the term substitution reaction?
It takes place when a more reactive functional group replaces another
E.G: Ch4 + Br2 = CH3Br +HBr
