organic chemistry Flashcards
(10 cards)
what is an allotrope
different physical form of the same element
what is organic chemistry
is the study of the compounds of carbon (with the exclucion of things such as oxides of carbon)
what are hydrocarbons
hydrocarbons are the simplest class of organic compounds
what are aliphatic hydrocarbons
carbons and hydrogen atoms are arranged in straight chains or branced chains
what are cyclic hydrocarbons
carbon atoms are arranged in a ring struture
what are saturated hydrocarbons
contain only single carbon to carbon bonds - covalent (alkane)
what are unsaturated hydrocarbons
contain double or triple carbon to carbon bonds (alkene and alkyne)
what is fractional distillation
process used to refine (separate) crude oil into it’s components or fractions
what is distallation
a method for separating 2 or more liquid compounds on the basis of boiling-point differences
what is distallation in the labaratory
process used to separate and purify liquids in the laboratory based on boiling point
