Organic Chemistry Flashcards
(9 cards)
Define a hydrocarbon
A compound containing hydrogen and carbon atoms ONLY
Define empirical formula
The simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound
Define molecular formula
The exact number of each type of atom in a compound/molecule
Define general formula
CnH2n+2
Define displayed formula
Shows full structural arrangement of atoms and all bonds in a molecule as individual lines
State 4 characteristics of a homologous series
- The same general formula
- Each consecutive member after the first differs by adding a CH2 group
- Gradation (trend) in physical properties
- Similar chemical properties
In organic, define saturated
All carbon-carbon bonds are single bonds
In organic, define unsaturated
1 or more carbon-carbon bonds are NOT single bonds
Define the term isomer
2 or more compounds with the same molecular formula but a different displayed formula
