What is a homologous series?
A family of compounds with similar chemical properties whose successive members differ by the addition of a -CH2-
What is a functional group?
Part of the molecule that is responsible for the molecules chemical properties
What is an aliphatic hydrocarbon?
Carbon atoms are joined to each other in straight chains
What is an alicyclic hyrocarbon?
Carbon atoms are joined to each other in a ring (cyclic structures)
What is an aromatic hyrocarbon?
Some or all of the carbon atoms are found in a benzene ring

Structural formula
What type of formula is this?

Skeletal formula
What is structural isomerism?
Structural isomers are compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formula
What is homolytic fission?
When a covalent bond breaks by homolytic fission each of the bonded atoms takes one of the shared elecrons from the bonds
