organic chemistry Flashcards
1
Q
hydrocarbons (definition)
A
compounds containing only hydrogen and carbon atoms
2
Q
prefixes 1-10
A
1-meth 2-eth 3-pro 4-but 5-pent 6-hex 7-hept 8-oct 9-non 10-dec
3
Q
Alkanes groups
A
- All single bonds
- end in “ane”
- “saturated” because each is bonded with the max amount of atoms
- formula is CnH2n+2
4
Q
alkyl groups
A
- branched off hydrocarbons
- changes to “yl” (eg. methyl)
5
Q
naming rules…
A
- find the longest parent chain
- number the atoms (with the lowest number possible for alkyls)
- find the branching alkyls
- put in alphabetical order and put numbers of where they go
- use the di- tri- if they have more than one branch
6
Q
cycloalkanes
A
- chains connected in a circle
- prefix “cyclo”
7
Q
Alkyl halides (halo groups)
A
- F “flouro”
- Cl “chloro”
- Br “bromo”
- I “iodo”
