Organic Chemistry Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the features of a homologous series?
- Same general formula
- Same functional group
- Similar chemical properties
- Trend in physical properties
- Increase by a CH2 group each time
What is a hydrocarbon?
Contain only hydrogen and carbon atoms
What does saturated mean?
Contains only c-c single bonds.
What does hydration mean?
Adding water to a molecule.
What does dehydration mean?
The elimination of water from a compound.
What is hydrolysis?
The chemical breakdown of a compound due to its reaction with water.
What is hydrogenation?
Adding hydrogen to a molecule.
What are the 3 types of structural isomers?
- Chain
- Position
- Functional Group
What are structural isomers?
Structural isomers have the same molecular formula but a different structural formula.
What are the 2 types of stereoisomers?
- Geometric ( E-Z) caused by the non-rotation of C=C
- Optical
What are stereoisomers?
Stereoisomers have the same structural formula but a different arrangement of atoms in space.
What is fractional distillation?
Fractional distillation is used to separate a mixture because they have different boiling points.
