organic chemistry definitions Flashcards
(11 cards)
organic chemistry
organic chemistry is the study of hydrocarbons
hydrocarbon
hydrocarbon is a compound consisting of hydrogen and carbon only
unsaturated
unsaturated means it contains a double or triple carbon bond
saturated
saturated means it contains a single carbon bond
functional group
a functional group is an atom or a group of atoms which is responsible for the characteristic properties of an organic compound
structural isomer
a structural isomer is a compound with the same molecular formula but different structural formula
primary alcohol
primary alcohol is when the C that the OH is attached to is itself attached to 1 other C
secondary alcohol
secondary alcohol is when the C that the OH is attached to is itself is attached to 2 other C’s
tertiary alcohol
tertiary alcohol is when the C that the OH is attached to is itself attached to 3 other C’s
polymerisation
polymerisation is the addition of small molecules (monomers) of alkenes
aromatic
an aromatic is an organic compound which contains a benzene ring
