Organic II- Carboxylic acids and esters Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
What is the functional gtoup of a carboxylic acid?
A
-COOH
2
Q
How are carboxylic acids produced?
A
The oxidation of primary alcohols under reflux.
3
Q
Why are carboxylic acids weak acids?
A
They only partially dissociate in solution, forming a H+ ion and a carboxylate ion (RCOO-)
4
Q
How do carboxylic acids react with carbonates?
A
React as acids with carbonates to produce a carboxylate salt , water and carbon dioxide.
Eg. Ethanoic acid + sodium carbonate > sodium ethanoate + water + carbon dioxide.
5
Q
A
6
Q
How do small chain carboxylic acids form hydrogen bonds with water molecules?
A
Bonds form between the lone pair on an oxygen and the delta positive hydrogen. This means they are soluble in water.
