ORGANISATION Flashcards
(33 cards)
What is a tissue ?
A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function
What are examples of tissues in mammals?
Muscular tissue, glandular tissue, epithelial tissue
What is an organ?
An organ is a group of different tissues that work together to perform a certain function
What tissues are the stomach made up of ?
Muscular tissue, glandular tissue, epithelial tissue
What do the tissues in the stomach do ?
Muscular tissue churns up food, glandular tissue makes digestive juices, epithelial tissue covers the outside and inside of the stomach
What is an organ system ?
An organ system is a group of organs working together to perform a specific function
Give an example of an organ system
Digestive system
What are enzymes?
Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up useful chemical reactions in the body
What is the part called that the substrate fits into in an enzyme?
Active site
What two factors affect enzymes?
Temperature and ph
What happens to enzymes if the temperature is too high or if ph is too high or low ?
With higher temperatures bonds in the enzymes break and it becomes denatured, when ph changes bonds are interfered with and cause denaturing
What is the optimum pH for most enzymes ?
pH 7 as its neutral
What pH does pepsin work best at and why?
Pepsin breaks down proteins in the stomach and work best at pH 2 so is well suited in the acidic conditions of the stomach
How do you test for starch ?
Use iodine and it will turn to blue-black
How do you calculate the rate of reaction ?
1000/ time
What are proteins broken down into ?
Amino acids
What are fats and lipids broken down into ?
Fatty acids and glycerol
What is starch broken down into ?
Maltose
What enzyme breaks down starch ?
Amylase
Where is amylase made ?
The salivary glands, the pancreas, the small intestine
What enzyme breaks down proteins?
Protease
Where is protease made ?
The stomach, the pancreas, small intestine
What enzyme breaks down lipids ?
Lipase
Where is lipase made ?
The pancreas, the small intestine
