11
Q

What happens to enzymes if the temperature is too high or if ph is too high or low ?

A

With higher temperatures bonds in the enzymes break and it becomes denatured, when ph changes bonds are interfered with and cause denaturing

Q

What pH does pepsin work best at and why?

A

Pepsin breaks down proteins in the stomach and work best at pH 2 so is well suited in the acidic conditions of the stomach

16
Q

What are proteins broken down into ?

17
Q

What are fats and lipids broken down into ?

A

Fatty acids and glycerol

18
Q

What is starch broken down into ?

19
Q

What enzyme breaks down starch ?

20
Q

Where is amylase made ?

A

The salivary glands, the pancreas, the small intestine

21
Q

What enzyme breaks down proteins?

22
Q

Where is protease made ?

A

The stomach, the pancreas, small intestine

23
Q

What enzyme breaks down lipids ?

24
Q

Where is lipase made ?

A

The pancreas, the small intestine

25
What dies bile do ?
Bike neutralises stomach acid as the pH is too acidic for the small intestines enzymes to work properly, it also emulsifies fats giving them a bigger surface area for lipase to work on so speeds up digestion
26
Where is bile produced ?
In the liver
27
Where is bile stored ?
Gall bladder
28
Why does the stomach produce hydrochloric acid ?
To kill bacteria and give the right pH for the protease enzyme to work
29
What does the pancreas do ?
Produces protease , amylase and lipase and releases them into the small intestine
30
What does the small intestine do ?
Produces protease, amylase and lipase and food is absorbed into the blood
31
How do you test for sugar?
Use benedicts solution and it will turn from blue to green to brick-red
32
How can you test for proteins ?
Use biuret solution and it will change from blue to purple
33
How do you test for lipids ?
Use Sudan iii stain solution and there will be a layer if bright red
