Organisms and their environment Flashcards
(13 cards)
Food chain
series of organisms which energy and nutrients are transferred in the form of food
Bioaccumulation
accumulation of non-biodegradable chemicals overtime which cannot be excreted in fatty tissues of organism
Energy may be lost to the environment by..
undigested matter everted by consumers
Metabolic waste excreted by consumers
Heat during respiration
Uneaten body part (bones)
Decomposers
feed on decaying organic matter. Respire aerobically to release CO2
Reasons for conservation
Prevent extinction
Maintain large genetic pool - change in environment less likely to wipe out whole species
Producers
organisms that can make their own food by photosynthesis. Producers contain chlorophyll which traps and converts light energy to chemical energy
Insecticide
non biodegradable, cannot be excreted, stored in fatty tissues, passed along food chains, conc increases along trophic lvl, results in bio magnification
Trophic level
feeding position of an animal in a food chain
Undesirable affects for deforestation
Loss of biodiversity
Global warming
Importance of carbon cycle
Ensure continuous supply of CO2 for photosynthesis. Photosynthesis coverts light energy into chemical energy in food.
Enables energy flow through ecosystem. Carbons compounds carry the trapped solar energy from one organism to another
Consumers
organisms that are not able to make their own food. They obtain energy by feeding on other organisms
Carbon sinks
Stores carbon compounds for long period of time
Store more carbon than it releases
Biomagnification
increasing conc of certain chemicals in each exceeding trophic level. Passed along food chain. Become concentrated in the bodies of the final consumers
